Alzheimer's Disease

Alzheimer’s disease is a form of dementia and mental decline. Alzheimer’s disease progresses slowly. The initial symptom is usually memory loss; as the disease progresses the patient may experience decision making issues, confusion regarding date and time, trouble learning and remembering new things, and have issues with activities of daily living. Alzheimer’s disease occurs as a result in a decrease in levels of certain chemicals in the brain called neurotranmitters. What causes this decline is not clear.

The Alzheimer’s diagnosis is made after reviewing medical history and symptoms with the patient and family. Radiographic imaging may also be ordered. There are medication therapies available to help slow the progression of Alzheimer’s disease and help with symptom management.
