The purpose of the Research Department of Neurology Associates, P.A. is to conduct clinical research on medications, medical treatments and medical instrumentation. Research studies or trials are conducted to provide our patients access to new medications or therapies that are not yet available to the general public. Additionally, patients have the opportunity to receive expert medical care without cost during the trial. Studies or trials allow patients to take an active role in their own health care, be a part of the advancement of science, and to help others with similar conditions.
As a result of participating in clinical research projects, our medical staff has access to specialists all over the world who jointly participate in the studies. Our physicians keep current in the latest and most innovative technology and product indications. They attend meetings where the results and effectiveness of the study trials are discussed. The physicians who participate in these studies are truly experts in their field.
Along with the physicians and nurse practitioners, the Research Department has a Certified Clinical Research Coordinator, two Registered Nurse Research Coordinators, and two Research Assistants who see the patients at each trial visit. They meet with the patient at the beginning of the trial and follow them through each study phase until the conclusion of the study.
Clinical trials are sponsored by various organizations such as health care institutions, individual investigators, government agencies and pharmaceutical companies. All sponsors contact the Research Department to solicit interest in conducting the trial. After reviewing the protocol, Neurology Associates Clinical Research decides if participation is appropriate for our organization.
Acceptance of the study is based on the following criteria:
Once the decision to participate in the study has been made, the research staff begins the recruitment process. The participant must be able to visit the Research clinic on a regular basis while being monitored by the Physicians and Research staff to determine the health effectiveness of the medication or treatment. Data is carefully recorded and monitored throughout the trial. If at any time during the trial, the patient decides to end their participation, they may withdraw without consequence. Also, if the medical staff feels it is no longer appropriate for the patient to participate, recommendation for withdrawal with documentation explaining the reason for discharge will be made.
