Video Electronystagmography (ENG)

Video electronystagmography (ENG) is used to measure a number of brainstem and brain based reflexes as well as inner ear function. An infrared camera inside a set of goggles is used to see and record specific eye movements during testing. By measuring a patient’s ability to track an object in space, fixate on an object while spinning or respond to various stimuli we can observe several reflexes. Video ENG testing is often used in the diagnosis and treatment of vertigo/dizziness and is also beneficial for other brain based conditions.

ENG / BALANCE TESTING PREPARATION

All patients are asked not to wear any skin lotion, moisturizing creams, oils or make-up of any kind on the face the day of testing.

NO FOOD 4 HOURS PRIOR TO TESTING.

BALANCE TEST PROCEDURES INCLUDE SOME/ALL OF THE FOLLOWING:

  1. Visual observation of various stationary or moving lights or stripes.
  2. Placement of the patient in various head and body positions to determine if such maneuvers create dizziness.
  3. Stimulation the balance system of the inner ears by placing a small amount of cool and warm air into the ears.
  4. A variety of eye, head and body movements are recorded during these procedures.

MOST COMMONLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  1. What does this testing look at?

Balance testing evaluates the part of the body that helps maintain balance, including the brain, central nervous system, visual input, proprioception, and inner ear function.

  1. Will the testing hurt? Will it make me dizzy?

Your balance testing will not be painful. Since we are evaluating the balance system, portions of the testing may cause you to experience dizziness. Dizziness, produced during the balance testing is usually not severe and doesn’t usually last for any extended period of time.

  1. Will I be able to drive after I am finished with my testing?

Patients usually have no difficulty driving after testing. If you are extremely dizzy, or questions your ability to drive, please have someone come with you who will be able to drive in the event you are unable to drive.

  1. Why must I stay off certain medications prior to my test?

Certain medications may affect the results of the testing, and should therefore be avoided for at least 48 hours prior to your testing. All forms of alcohol should be avoided for the same period of time. Under certain conditions, the doctor may allow certain medications up to 24 hours prior to testing, but this may compromise the results.

  1. Why am I having several different tests run on my balance system?

Each test performed provides a piece of the puzzle. There are several different portions to the balance system. Some portions test the inner ear/eye reflexes and other test the inner eat/spinal reflexes. Usually several tests are necessary to correctly diagnose a problem.

  1. How long will the test take?

Testing will take approximately 45 minutes to 1 hour.

  1. What is the result of my balance testing?

Your testing must be completed in full before the doctor can evaluate them in order to reach a conclusion as to the result. Test results will be available in 5-7 business days.

  1. May family members be present during the test?

Family members are NOT in the testing rooms while patients are being tested. Your cooperation is appreciated in this matter.
