Video electronystagmography (ENG) is used to measure a number of brainstem and brain based reflexes as well as inner ear function. An infrared camera inside a set of goggles is used to see and record specific eye movements during testing. By measuring a patient’s ability to track an object in space, fixate on an object while spinning or respond to various stimuli we can observe several reflexes. Video ENG testing is often used in the diagnosis and treatment of vertigo/dizziness and is also beneficial for other brain based conditions.
All patients are asked not to wear any skin lotion, moisturizing creams, oils or make-up of any kind on the face the day of testing.
NO FOOD 4 HOURS PRIOR TO TESTING.
Balance testing evaluates the part of the body that helps maintain balance, including the brain, central nervous system, visual input, proprioception, and inner ear function.
Your balance testing will not be painful. Since we are evaluating the balance system, portions of the testing may cause you to experience dizziness. Dizziness, produced during the balance testing is usually not severe and doesn’t usually last for any extended period of time.
Patients usually have no difficulty driving after testing. If you are extremely dizzy, or questions your ability to drive, please have someone come with you who will be able to drive in the event you are unable to drive.
Certain medications may affect the results of the testing, and should therefore be avoided for at least 48 hours prior to your testing. All forms of alcohol should be avoided for the same period of time. Under certain conditions, the doctor may allow certain medications up to 24 hours prior to testing, but this may compromise the results.
Each test performed provides a piece of the puzzle. There are several different portions to the balance system. Some portions test the inner ear/eye reflexes and other test the inner eat/spinal reflexes. Usually several tests are necessary to correctly diagnose a problem.
Testing will take approximately 45 minutes to 1 hour.
Your testing must be completed in full before the doctor can evaluate them in order to reach a conclusion as to the result. Test results will be available in 5-7 business days.
Family members are NOT in the testing rooms while patients are being tested. Your cooperation is appreciated in this matter.
The following is a guideline for taking medication prior to Vestibular (ENG/BALANCE) testing. It is necessary to avoid certain medications 48 hours prior to testing to produce accurate test results.
